RE:GENESIS: TRANSFORMED BY WEAKNESS

In Genesis 32, Jacob prepares to face Esau, but the deeper battle is with God. Before Jacob ever sees Esau’s 400 men, God meets him with the reminder that he is not alone. In the battle, God teaches Jacob to face what he once avoided, pray the promises of God, and humble himself instead of grasping for control. Then, through the battle, God blesses Jacob by wounding his strength. Jacob wrestles with God, receives a limp, confesses his name, and is renamed Israel. He prevails not by overpowering God, but by clinging to Him. This points us to Jesus, the true Israel, who entered His own lonely struggle, was wounded for our sin, and secured the blessing for us. God transforms us by weakness, teaching us to stop striving and cling to Him.
