THE KING WE ASKED FOR: EASTER SERIES: THE KING (1 SAMUEL 8:4-22)
Mar 15, 2026 • Greg McGhee
Israel demanded a king so they could be “like the nations,” rejecting God as their true King (1 Samuel 8). Though God warned them a king would take their sons, resources, and freedom, they insisted. Saul became the king they asked for—impressive in appearance but lacking a heart fully submitted to God. As his reign unfolds, Samuel’s warning becomes reality. Saul drafts men into constant war, rules through rash decisions, destabilizes the nation with fear and jealousy, and ultimately leads Israel into national defeat. The tragedy of Saul’s story is not merely the failure of a king but the consequence of a people rejecting God’s rule. Be careful what you ask for, you just might get it.
