RE:GENESIS: TRANSFORMED BY COMPLETE OBEDIENCE

In Genesis 34, Jacob’s family experiences the devastating consequences of stopping short of complete obedience. Jacob settles near Shechem instead of returning all the way to Bethel, and the result is a chapter filled with violence, passivity, revenge, and pain. Dinah is violated, Jacob remains silent, and Simeon and Levi respond with destructive vengeance. Everyone reacts wrongly, and no one seems to know what righteous justice should look like. Yet the story does not end in Shechem. God calls Jacob back to Bethel, back to worship, and back to complete obedience. The contrast points us to Jesus, who does not ignore the wounded or exploit their pain. He engages with truth, compassion, and grace. Genesis 34 reminds us that almost obedience is still disobedience, but God graciously calls us back to Himself.
